Youth apprenticeship is a work-based learning strategy offering high school students an array of benefits including paid on-the-job learning, related classroom instruction, a paycheck and, in many programs, dual enrollment in college and college credit. This program is not an unpaid internship, rather an opportunity for high school students to get a foot in the door at a company that supports in-house, upward mobility. Youth apprenticeships are offered in many industries, including health care, IT, transportation, advanced manufacturing, financial services and construction. There is increasing demand from employers to work with high school students on apprenticeships. The U.S. Departments of Labor (USDOL) and Education are working together to strengthen alignment between secondary schools and registered apprenticeship programs to ensure a younger demographic has access to this opportunity. Hear an overview of registered apprenticeship programs from the USDOL’s Office of Apprenticeship, and discuss current efforts to strengthen youth apprenticeship opportunities for high school students.
