How can school counselors best support children’s holistic development in an environment of increasing academic demands and accountability pressures? Engaging children in shared reading of storybooks is an effective way to support children’s social/emotional development, while reinforcing literacy learning and academic engagement. Through reinforcing the joy of reading and building connections to characters in stories, children are guided to become the storytellers of culturally relevant books with story plots focused on various social/emotional skills. Hear how elementary school counselors can use storybooks as a way to build children’s social/emotional learning, while reinforcing literacy instruction and academic engagement.
